FC KANSAS CITY TO REMATCH WITH SEATTLE

Blues’ Second Chance at Snapping Seattle’s Streak

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KAN. (May 20, 2024) – FC Kansas City will host undefeated Seattle Reign FC for the first time this season on Wednesday night. The Blues are hoping a home crowd will be the push to snap Seattle’s seven-game winning streak. Kansas City just hosted the expansion club Houston Dash to a 2-2 draw while Seattle comes off of hosting the Blues last Wednesday with a 3-2 win. Kickoff for this pivotal match is set for 7:00 PM Central Time on Verizon Wireless Field at Durwood Soccer Stadium.

On Sunday, the Blues welcomed the National Women’s Soccer League’s newest team, the Houston Dash, to Kansas City for the first time. Even in the middle of a rough patch of the schedule, FC Kansas City gave the fans something to watch. Lauren Holiday scored in the second minute of the match on a through ball from Erika Tymrak. Houston equalized with a goal from Jordan Jackson later in the first half. Tymrak would take the spotlight 16 minutes later with her own goal. The play started with Tymrak sliding past the backline by putting the ball through the defender’s legs. After the beautiful move, Tymrak set up and sent the ball soaring to the far post for a beautiful goal. The first half ended with Kansas City up 2-1. Houston scored the final goal of the night in the 76th minute with Tiffany McCarty taking credit. Three yellow cards were issued in the second half alone. Houston’s Nina Burger and Osniachi Ohale and Kansas City’s Nikki Phillips were given the cards. Each club earned 1 point at the end of the 2-2 match.

Last week, Seattle hosted Kansas City on Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium for one of the memorable matches of the season so far. The 3-2 victory for Seattle did not come easy for the undefeated team. Seattle’s Kendall Fletcher scored in the 17th minute while Kim Little capitalized on a penalty kick minutes later. The Blues still kept a possession-minded strategy even while down 2-0 in the first half. In the 44th minute, forward Amy Rodriguez was taken down in the box. Holiday took the penalty kick and put it past Seattle’s Hope Solo to make the score 2-1 at half. Tymrak came on for Liz Bogus in the 57th minute and made an immediate impact. From outside the box, Tymrak netted an equalizer in the 61st minute. Reign FC captain Keelin Winters headed the last goal to bring the match score to its final 3-2.

FC Kansas City will continue with the strategy taken in the last match with some improvements to try and end Seattle’s streak. Two of the best goalkeepers in the world face off in this game. Solo and Kansas City’s Nicole Barnhart top shutouts for the season with 4 and 3, respectively. The Blues will push the ball up to the dangerous midfield of Holiday, Tymrak and Rodriguez for the offense. While captain Becky Sauerbrunn and Phillips will attempt to hold off Winters and Little from Seattle. This match is full of world-class talent and will be one to watch.

Kickoff for Wednesday will be at 7:00 PM Central Time. The Blues host on Verizon Wireless Field at Durwood Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).
