FC KANSAS CITY TRAVELS TO BOSTON

First Matchup with Boston of the 2024 Season

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan (May 23, 2024) – FC Kansas City will travel to take on Boston Breakers for the first time on Sunday. The Blues are coming off of a 1-1 draw that ended Seattle Reign FC’s season-long winning streak. Boston just lost 1-4 to Chicago Red Stars on Sunday. Kick off at Harvard Stadium will be at 6:00 PM Central Time and will be streaming live on YouTube.
On Sunday, FC Kansas City hosted Seattle Reign FC to a 1-1 draw. The National Women’s Soccer League’s leading scorers, Kansas City’s Amy Rodriguez and Seattle’s Kim Little scored the two goals of the night and still share the leading scorer title. Rodriguez scored in the 42nd minute on a play from Liz Bogus with her left foot. Rodriguez’s and Bogus’ player rights belonged to Seattle last season. Little’s equalizing goal came from a controversial penalty kick in the 44th minute. Though both sides created many close opportunities, none of them would break the tie. The match was one of the most exciting yet and showcased the talent that play in the NWSL.

Boston hosted the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday. The match ended 4-1, marking the Breakers’ fifth loss on the season. Boston’s only goal came from a penalty kick by Heather O’Reilly. Then penalty was the result of an accidental handball in the box. Chicago’s Michelle Wenino took credit for the other goal of the first half. A bouncing corner kick found Wenino’s foot and she capitalized in the 23rd minute. The score was tied 1-1 at half, but it would not stay that way for long. In the 50th minute, Jen Hoy found the back of the net on a pass from Adriana Leon. Chicago would score two more times, one from Lori Chalupny and the other from Zakiya Bywaters.

Sunday will be the last match of a tiring nine game streak for Kansas City. Though most of the Blues’ squad is healthy, fatigue is still a problem. Boston’s defense will have to solidify to stop Rodriguez along with Lauren Holiday and Erika Tymrak. Though Kansas City and Boston have the same number of goals allowed, the Blues have doubled Boston’s goals scored. Becky Sauerbrunn and Nikki Phillips will have to watch Boston’s leading scorer, O’Reilly who leads the team with two goals for the season.
