RECAP: SHEA GROOM SCORED LATE BUT FC KANSAS CITY FELL TO THE SEATTLE REIGN ON THE ROAD
Groom scored her second goal of the season in stoppage time
SEATTLE, Washington (June 27, 2024) – FC Kansas City rookie Shea Groom’s goal in stoppage time was not enough for the Blues as the Seattle Reign FC tied the regular season series with a 2-1 victory in front of 3,331 fans at Moda Pitch Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
Following a scoreless first half where both teams created multiple scoring opportunities, Seattle found the back of the net in the 62nd minute when Beverly Yanez received a ball inside the box before slipping it under goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart to make it 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, the Reign increased the lead when Danielle Foxhoven sent a long ball to the box that found Kim Little who brought it down with her chest and put it away with a right-footed rocket making it 2-0 in the 64th minute.
Down two goals, Coach Vlatko Andonovski’s team continued to create dangerous plays but Seattle’s back line made it difficult for the Blues until Groom notched her second tally of the season with a stunning shot to the top right corner in the 91st minute for a final 2-1 score.
Next up, FC Kansas City will return home to Swope Soccer Village following a three-game road trip and a two-week break during the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage when the Blues host the Washington Spirit next Friday, July 3.
