RECAP: FC KANSAS CITY SHUTS OUT THE WASHINGTON SPIRIT 3-0 AT SWOPE SOCCER VILLAGE
Averbuch, Groom and Bogus each scored for the Blues
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 3, 2024) – FC Kansas City (4-5-2, 14 points) returned home to Swope Soccer Village after five weeks in great fashion as the Blues defeated the Washington Spirit 3-0 (5-4-2, 17 points) with goals from Yael Averbuch, Shea Groom and Liz Bogus in front of 2,079 fans.
The Blues came out to the field with an offensive mindset since kickoff and created multiple scoring opportunities before Washington’s Estelle Johnson was issued a yellow card for a foul on Groom just outside the box. Averbuch found the back of the net with a beautiful right-footed free kick to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute.
Coach Vlatko Andonovski’s team continued to pressure in the second half and eight minutes later, Groom increased the lead when Frances Silva, who entered the match for an injured Sarah Hagen in the 36th minute, crossed the ball for the rookie to tap in making it 2-0 with her third tally of the season.
Twelve minutes later, Bogus would seal the victory when she put the ball in the back of the net after volleying a perfectly placed cross from team captain Leigh Ann Robinson making it 3-0 in the 66th minute.
Later in the match, Mizzou product and 2024 NWSL College Draft pick Kaysie Clark entered the match for Bogus in the 84th minute to make her debut.
Next up, the Blues will visit the Boston Breakers on Thursday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
