PREVIEW: FC Kansas City hosts Chicago in final home match of 2024
KANSAS CITY (September 11, 2024) -- FC Kansas City concludes is home slate at Swope Soccer Village when it hosts the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday evening. It will be the second matchup this week between the two squads and will start at 5 pm. The Blues won the previous meeting 3-2 on Wednesday with a brace from Shea Groom and another goal from Frances Silva. Christen Press and Sophia Huerta scored for the Red Stars.
Despite winning at Toyota Park, FC Kansas City was eliminated from National Women’s Soccer League playoffs contention for the first time in four years. The Blues are two-time defending champions and fell to the eventual champions in the semifinals in year one.
Groom’s goals were her team-leading seventh and eighth of the season, which is her second with the Blues. She battled injury to finish with four as a rookie in 2024.
The Blues carry a 2-4-3 record at home into their final game at Swope Soccer Village. That mark includes a 0-0 draw against the Red Stars earlier this year. The two teams are tied with a 1-1-1 record in the season series and Chicago has a slight 5-4-3 lead all-time.
FC Kansas City ends its season on Saturday night with its first trip to Orlando to take on the Pride, who were added as an expansion team this year. The Blues won the first matchup 2-0 in May at home. The game will start at 4 p.m. CT.
