FC Kansas City Finishes Preseason Undefeated
Lawrence, Kan. (April 10, 2024) – FC Kansas City wrapped up the preseason schedule with a 3-1 win over the Kansas Jayhawks at Rock Chalk Park Monday night. Alexa Newfield, Erika Tymrak and Maegan Kelly were the goal scorers for the night.
The Jayhawks struck first and early in the opening half. Lois Heuchan beat her defenders and found herself in a one-on-one with Nicole Barnhart. Heuchan slid her shot to the side and found the back of the net in the 11th minute.
FC Kansas City quickly took over possession and kept the ball in their offensive half. Amy Rodriguez, back from national team duty, tried to answer twice just minutes after Kansas struck but missed wide left both times. It would be Newfield who tied the game up in the 21st minute. The North Carolina product fired off a rocket from 20 yards out and placed it just out of the Kansas goalkeeper’s reach.
The Blues took the lead in the 29th minute when Tymrak was taken down in the box. She stepped up to take her own resulting penalty kick. The Jayhawks’ goalkeeper guessed wrong, diving the opposite direction and Tymrak doubled the score, 2-1.
After a quick break and plenty of substitutions, the game evened out more. Bowen struck from the corner of the 18-yard box and hit the crossbar. Tymrak had another close chance but it went high just past the hour mark.
Maegan Kelly scored the last goal of the night after carrying the ball past the Kansas midfield. She set up her shot and floated a chipper just over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The win over the Jayhawks makes for an unbeaten preseason schedule.
FC Kansas City will now change gears to start the fifth NWSL season. The Blues are opening up the season on Sunday, April 16th at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, MO. The tilt with the Boston Breakers is slated for 5:00 p.m. CT and tickets are still available here.
