RECAP: FC KANSAS CITY FALLS 3-2 TO THE HOUSTON DASH AT BBVA COMPASS STADIUM
Lauren Holiday scored her first goal of the season in the third minute
HOUSTON, TX. (July 29, 2024) – FC Kansas City (5-6-3, 18 points) fell in their visit to BBVA Compass Stadium and dropped their first ever match against the Houston Dash (5-4-5, 20 points) after FIFA World Cup final MVP Carli Lloyd scored the game-winning goal late in the match moments after Sarah Hagen found the equalizer handing the Blues their sixth defeat of the year.
The five-goal match, which was broadcast live on FOX Sports GO, was full of action with both sides creating multiple scoring opportunities from kickoff all the way until the final whistle. All 6,425 fans in attendance, did not have to wait long to see a goal as midfielder Lauren Holiday put the Blues on the board in the 3rd minute after her right-footed shot was deflected by a defender and past goalkeeper Erin McLeod.
Nine minutes later, Houston would tie the match when Kealia Ohai’s cross was volleyed by Ellie Brush near the penalty spot to the far right corner making it 1-1 in the 12th minute of play followed by the first go-ahead tally of the night scored by Jessica McDonald in the 17th minute who raced down the left side of the field before cutting into the box and shooting a near post shot from close range.
Both teams continued putting pressure on both goalkeepers throughout the second half when Coach Vlatko Andonovski’s team’s persistence paid off in the 85th minute when Liz Bogus’ shot bounced off the post before Sarah Hagen, who entered the match five minutes earlier, pushed the ball to the back of the net making it 2-2.
Not too long after Kansas City’s tying goal and when the match wore on, Lloyd received a pass from teammate Niki Cross and struck a rocket from 30-yards out to the top left corner scoring the game-winner in the 87th minute despite goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart’s efforts.
Next up, FC Kansas City will try to regain a spot in the top four teams when the Blues visit the Chicago Red Stars this Saturday night.
