Amy Rodriguez with lone goal in game against Western New York
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (June 4th, 2024) - FC Kansas City shut out Western New York Flash 1-0 in front of 2,674 people on Verizon Wireless Field. The only goal came from Amy Rodriguez in the final minute of the first half on a pass from Leigh Ann Robinson. The Blues improve to 5-4-3 for the season.
The game started out with a slower pace, both teams had strategy at the focus of play. Tymrak crossed it to Mathias who just barely missed the header for a nice opening attack. A caution was issued early in the first half when Vicky Losada was shown a yellow card for a reckless foul in the eleventh minute.
A Robinson-Rodriguez goal almost happened in the fourteenth minute, but a Flash defender was there to deflect Robinson’s counter-attack. Robinson sent a low pass to Rodriguez who found some open net. There was no stoppage time so the first half ended right after the goal.
The second half saw more intensity than the first; both teams became more physical. Many shots from the Flash and the Blues kept going high over the net. Holiday sent a ball to Erika Tymrak, but Flash goalkeeper Lydia Williams came out for a crucial save.
In the seventieth minute, Western New York had a close chance with a free kick just outside the box. The ball was sent soaring in to the box, but Nicole Barnhart was there to save. The backlines from both teams were challenged by constant attacks. Possession switched rapidly and shots were soaring on both sides.
The big moment of the match was Amy LePeilbet entering the match in the eighty-fourth minute of the match. LePeilbet has been rehabbing a knee injury and sat out the last National Women’s Soccer League season as well as national duty.
The Blues are back in action again on Saturday to host the Boston Breakers. FC Kansas City will look to continue a shutout streak against the Breakers after winning 2-0 in the last matchup. For tickets to all home matches, call 855.4KC.GOAL
