LISLE, IL (August 1) – FC Kansas City (5-6-4, 19 points) and the Chicago Red Stars (7-1-6, 27 points) settled for a 2-2 draw in front of a sellout crowd of 3,447 fans at Benedictine University. Christen Press scored a brace but the Blues came back two times with goals from defender Amy LePeilbet and Sarah Hagen.

With this result, Coach Vlatko Andonovski’s team remained fifth in the NWSL standings and only one point away from a playoff spot. In addition, the Red Stars have not yet lost a home game this year.

Chicago took the lead in the 12th minute when captain Lori Chalupny sent a long ball to Press who dribbled past goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland before simply kicking the ball to the back of the net.

Nearly twenty minutes later, the Blues got on the board when Lauren Holiday sent a perfectly placed corner kick to defender Amy LePeilbet who scored her second tally of the season with a virtuous header despite goalkeeper Michele Dalton’s touch on the ball in the 35th minute.

Following an intense first half, both teams came out with an offensive mindset for the second stanza creating multiple scoring opportunities. However, it wasn’t until the 74th minute when Press tallied her second one of the night (eighth of the season) when she received a ball just outside the box and chipped the ball to the top left corner making it impossible for Rowland to avoid the go-ahead goal.

After entering the match in the 77th minute, Hagen scored the game-tying goal for the second time in as many games when she beat a defender and headed a beautiful cross from Heather O’Reilly to the far left post to make it 2-2.

Next up, FC Kansas City will play its first of a four-game home stretch when the Blues host the Western NY Flash on August 8.
